Job Title: Histologic Technologist Profession: Histo Tech Specialty: Laboratory Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: M-F 5:00am-1:30pm Experience: Minimum 1 year preferred License: Histotechnician certification required Certifications: All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated Must-Have: - Histology training - Histochemistry skills - Immunohistochemistry skills - Histology Safety Regulatory knowledge - Anatomical Pathology computer training - Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision Description: Under general supervision of the Histology/Cytology Manager, the Histologic Technologist is responsible for the complete preparation of all routine surgical and autopsy tissues. This includes frozen section, sendout procedures, processing, cutting, staining, and coverslipping. Performs cytology preparation, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry, including antibody optimizing and validation. Confirms and distributes completed surgical cases and reports, along with some clerical duties involving filing and retrieving requests. Possesses full knowledge of regulatory policies. Core Responsibilities: Embed all processed surgical tissue with quality and accuracy. Verify the identification of specimen blocks corresponds with the surgical grossing report. Cut and stain routine HE slides, label each slide with the correct patient identifier, and attach patient reports. Check each report verifying the slides match the dictation and deliver to the pathologist. Knowledge of all instrumentation is required, including troubleshooting abilities. Pull request logs for immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, recuts, and sendouts in the Pathology computer system. Enter sendout test charges as well as intraoperative consultation charges. Demonstrate a complete understanding of histology billing practices, including but not limited to Frozen Section, OR Consult, and Immunohistochemistry. Document and resolve any quality control and assurance issues and inform the supervisor. Perform maintenance checks on department equipment and document accordingly. Print patient reports and prepare reference lab requisitions for consultation accurately. Possess basic knowledge of cost management regarding reagents and efficiency, without compromising patient quality. Perform all recuts and histochemistry accurately and efficiently. Conduct immunohistochemistry stains with complete knowledge of automated instruments and troubleshooting abilities. Perform titration, optimization, and validations on new antibodies and lot numbers. Verify all immunohistochemistry and histochemistry stains function as expected. Separate, verify, and distribute completed test orders to the requesting pathologist. Possess sound judgment in daily departmental functions.
