This is a unique opportunity to handle sophisticated tax controversy and estate planning matters while working with high-net-worth individuals, closely held businesses, and nonprofits.
You’ll represent clients before the IRS and California taxing authorities and develop forward-thinking strategies to reduce risk, preserve wealth, and meet long-term goals. Experience with revocable and irrevocable trusts, charitable vehicles, and family limited partnerships is strongly preferred.
This role offers hands-on collaboration with the Managing Partner, a CPA, and a tight-knit legal team in a boutique environment that values precision, integrity, and proactive problem-solving.
Ideal candidates will have 3–5 years of relevant experience, California Bar admission, and a strong interest in both advocacy and strategic planning. Compensation: $150,000 Responsibilities: Key Focus Areas: IRS and state collections, audit, and appeals representation, including direct negotiation with revenue officers, appeals agents, and agency counsel Legal drafting for Tax Court petitions, estate plans, trust instruments, settlement proposals, and advisory memoranda Research and resolution of complex tax and estate issues involving foreign disclosures, pass-throughs, trusts, probate, and business succession Strategic estate and tax planning in coordination with real estate, probate, and corporate counsel
Key Responsibilities: Advise high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and fiduciaries on complex estate planning strategies, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, charitable vehicles, family limited partnerships, and succession planning. Represent clients in tax controversy and collections matters before the IRS, California Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Employment Development Department (EDD), and CDTFA, including audits, appeals, installment agreements, Offers in Compromise, and Tax Court proceedings. Draft and review a wide range of legal documents, including trusts, wills, durable powers of attorney, advance health care directives, Tax Court petitions, settlement proposals, and legal memoranda. Perform legal research and deliver strategic analysis on federal and state tax law, trust law, probate code, and complex planning structures, providing actionable guidance tailored to client goals. Collaborate with CPAs, paralegals, and other legal professionals on cross-disciplinary engagements involving business transactions, bankruptcy, probate, and real estate law. Communicate proactively with clients to explain legal concepts, set expectations, and ensure the delivery of practical, high-quality legal advice. Monitor changes in tax law and estate planning regulations, advising internal teams and clients on implications and opportunities for risk mitigation or planning optimization. Support the firm’s broader mission by contributing to client development, continuing education, and firm growth initiatives. Qualifications: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school; active membership in the California Bar in good standing is required 3–5 years of experience practicing law in tax law, estate planning, and related disciplines Familiarity with Tax Court procedure, tax controversy litigation, and administrative filings is preferred Experience with advanced planning strategies, including charitable trusts, family limited partnerships, and business succession planning, is highly desirable Strong interpersonal skills and a client-focused mindset, with a high degree of professionalism and emotional intelligence Proven success representing clients before the IRS and California taxing authorities, including in audits, appeals, collections, and settlement negotiations Strong command of federal and California tax law, including income, estate, and gift tax planning, and probate administration Substantial experience drafting comprehensive estate plans, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, durable powers of attorney, and healthcare directives Demonstrated ability to advise high-net-worth individuals, closely held business owners, and fiduciaries with discretion and strategic insight Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to deliver thoughtful, actionable advice Comfortable managing matters independently while contributing meaningfully in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment About Company At Edgar Law Group, we delve deep into the complexities of tax law to safeguard the interests of individuals and businesses nationwide.
