The Staff Accountant & Financial Analyst at Tire Discounters plays a key role in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. This hybrid position is responsible for executing core accounting functions, including the monthly close process, preparation of journal entries, and proper revenue and cost recognition in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The role involves preparing balance sheet reconciliations, profit and loss statements, and supporting schedules for internal and external reporting purposes.
In addition to routine accounting duties, the position provides financial analysis and business insights by investigating variances, identifying performance trends, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand key business drivers. This role contributes to decision-making by summarizing financial results for management and preparing relevant reporting packages. The individual may also support special initiatives such as process improvement projects, financial modeling, system upgrades, and audit readiness efforts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform month-end close activities, including preparation and posting of journal entries, accruals, and other necessary adjustments to ensure an accurate and timely close.
- Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to ensure proper recognition of revenue and expenses, including analysis of contracts, transactions, and supporting documentation.
- Complete monthly reconciliations for assigned balance sheet accounts. Investigate discrepancies, resolve variances, and ensure compliance with internal controls and audit standards.
- Assist in the preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation for the annual external audit. Respond to auditor inquiries and coordinate the timely delivery of requested materials.
- Generate monthly profit and loss statements for assigned business units. Conduct variance analysis to identify trends, issues, and opportunities, and provide context for fluctuations in financial performance.
- Partner with internal departments to gain insight into operational activities, understand business drivers, and validate the financial impact of key decisions or changes.
- Summarize financial results in clear and concise reports or dashboards for management. Highlight key findings, performance metrics, and areas requiring attention or action.
- Contribute to departmental and cross-functional projects, including system implementations, process improvements, and financial modeling. Provide data analysis and financial input to support informed decision-making.
- Maintain well-organized and accurate financial records, ensuring documentation is complete, up-to-date, and audit-ready in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the development of annual budgets and periodic forecasts by compiling data, analyzing trends, and partnering with business units.
- Monitor key financial and operational metrics, identify anomalies or unexpected trends, and proactively flag issues or opportunities to management.
- Support cash flow analysis and working capital reporting by tracking collections, disbursements, and timing of key transactions.
- Participate in the design, testing, and implementation of new processes or system enhancements to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reporting capabilities.
- Maintain internal documentation for accounting procedures, controls, and processes to support training, compliance, and audit readiness.
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as requested by Finance leadership or business partners to support decision-making.
- Stay current on changes in accounting standards, company policies, and industry best practices, and assist in ensuring compliance and appropriate application.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the month-end close process
- Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting processes, including variance analysis and predictive modeling.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and identify trends or issues
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively across departments
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to handle sensitive information with integrity and discretion
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, formulas); knowledge of ERP systems (such as Oracle, SAP, or NetSuite) preferred
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in accounting, financial analysis, or a similar finance role.
- Hands-on experience with month-end close, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Experience preparing or analyzing profit and loss statements and performing balance sheet reconciliations.
- Experience with ERP systems (such as Oracle, SAP, or NetSuite) preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- This position primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
- Frequently required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and lift or move items up to 25 pounds.
