The Project Read Tutor and Office Assistant plays a vital role in supporting adult learners to improve their literacy skills while providing administrative support to ensure the smooth operation of Project Read programs. This dual-role position requires strong organizational skills, a passion for education, and the ability to work with diverse learners and team members.
Position Description Tutor Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult learners in reading, writing, and basic math skills.
Assist learners in developing individualized learning goals and action plans (Roles and Goals)
Use a variety of teaching methods and resources tailored to learners’ needs. (Ability to complete training required)
Track and document learners’ progress through assessments and regular feedback.
Foster a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
Office Assistant Responsibilities
Greet learners, tutors, and visitors; provide program information and answer inquiries. Forward to other programs and Coordinators as appropriate.
Schedule tutoring sessions and assist in maintaining program calendars.
Assist in organizing workshops, events, and training sessions for tutors and learners.
Handle data entry, update program records, and maintain confidentiality through office 365 suite.
Assist in preparing instructional materials and resources for tutoring sessions.
Manage correspondence, including emails, phone calls, and mail related to Project Read.
Support outreach efforts by distributing flyers and promoting program services.
Maintain an organized and welcoming office environment.
Additional Information
The role may require evening or weekend availability to accommodate learners’ schedules.
Training and ongoing professional development opportunities will be provided.
Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education or related fields preferred.
Experience in tutoring, teaching, or working with adult learners is a plus.
Must be a Skyline College student in good academic standing enrolled in 6.0 units or more each semester
This is a Federal Work Study position and applicants must be eligible.
Desirable Skills Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Office 356, and basic database systems.
Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
Patience, empathy, and a passion for literacy and lifelong learning.
Hours: 6-10 hours per week
