Senior Director of Finance and Controller

Position Summary: The Senior Director of Finance and Controller is responsible for oversight of many significant components of the financial operations of the University under the supervision of the Vice President for Finance and Administration (CFO). This position works in close collaboration with senior leadership to manage the finances of the University, provide policy direction, and lead the elements of the financial operation that support and advance the University's mission and strategic goals. This position manages a team of professionals responsible for critical back-office functions, including accounting, purchasing, and payroll. This position works closely with all areas of the University and ensures the timely delivery of effective, efficient and exceptional customer service to the community.
Primary Responsibilities:
Financial accounting and reporting: Oversee financial accounting team, including monthly closing and preparation of financial statements and reports to the Finance and Investment Committee of the Board
Coordinate various forms of external audits, including annual financial audit, A-133 Single Audit, benefit plan audits, and others that arise over the course of time
Prepare draft annual financial statements, footnotes, functional expense summaries
Ensure ongoing proper accounting for financial transactions consistent with GAAP
Ensure ongoing proper accounting for restricted and endowed gifts to the University in collaboration with the Office of Alumnae and Donor Relations
Annual 990T and other tax reporting to the Federal Government and State of Wisconsin
Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research on annual IPEDs reporting
Provide post-award grant administration and financial reporting
Quarterly and annual compliance reporting connected to long-term bond financing
Managerial and financial reporting
Budgets, forecasts, business analytics and financial analysis: Oversee annual budget process, including communications to and meetings with vice-presidents, deans, department chairs and budget directors to establish guidelines for annual budgets
Oversee and assist in preparation of multi-year financial forecasts and other financial analyses in connection with strategic planning or evaluation of specific strategic initiatives
Cash and investment management and banking relationships: Oversee and assist with ongoing management of cash and investment accounts to ensure effective management of funds
Serve as primary liaison with bank, investment firm and bondholder partners
Business office operations: Oversee the Business Office team in billing and collection of student accounts
Preparation and reporting of Form 1098T to students and the Federal government
Collaborate with the Financial Aid Office in the administration of financial aid funds
Payroll, purchasing and accounts payable functions: Oversee the payroll function, including working with the HR Department in the administration of all elements of payroll and benefits for administrative personnel as well as full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty
Oversee preparation and reporting of all annual payroll and benefit regulatory filings, including W-2, 1099 Misc. and 1095
Oversee the purchasing and accounts payable functions, including collaborating with team members to establish best practices
Risk management and risk financing: Assist Vice President for Finance and Administration in the ongoing management of an enterprise risk management program
Protect the assets of the university through maintenance of fixed asset records and all relevant and reasonable forms of insurance coverage
Manage and develop all staff within areas of responsibility
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in accounting
Supervisory experience highly preferred
Higher Education experience or in a similar (non-profit) environment, +3 years
CPA and/or MBA a plus
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Committed to excellence in performance
Service oriented and collegial
