Title: Second Chance Ranch Assistant FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Second Chance Ranch Supervisor Your Mission: As a Second Chance Ranch Assistant, you will play a vital role in caring for animals and maintaining the facilities that serve as a safe haven for equines and other ranch residents. Your work will support the Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s mission by providing compassionate care, rehabilitation, and enrichment to animals in need, while ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for both animals and people at the Second Chance Ranch. What You’ll Do: You will provide daily care, enrichment, and behavioral rehabilitation for ranch animals, including equines, and assist in their training. You’ll operate heavy machinery such as tractors, trucks with horse trailers, and other equipment to support animal care and ranch operations. You will assist veterinarians during exams, treatments, procedures, and vaccinations, and ensure that all animal records are accurate and up to date. Your role will also include training and supporting volunteers, assisting with adoptions, foster placements, transfers, and transporting animals as needed. You will actively promote the ARL’s mission by fostering positive relationships with visitors, volunteers, and the community, and by ensuring that safety protocols and OSHA guidelines are consistently followed. What You Bring: You have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of professional experience in animal care. Experience with equines and customer service is preferred, and you have a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. You’re comfortable operating ranch equipment and vehicles and can work effectively in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment. You have excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, and can manage conflict with professionalism. You’re proficient in basic math and familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, and you’re committed to both animal welfare and teamwork. Why Work at the ARL? Working Conditions: This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold. You may be exposed to odors, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, moderate noise, and the risk of bites or scratches. The role involves standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods and working in an environment that requires both physical stamina and attention to safety.
