Brief Summary The Respiratory Therapist administers general respiratory therapy procedures, including humidity and aerosol therapy, pulmonary secretion clearance, CPAP, BIPAP, and High-Flow Therapy. The role also requires basic mechanical ventilator management skills such as setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Essential Functions Clinical Duties Administers treatments promptly as ordered by the physician.
Performs EKGs, ABGs, new starts, sputum inductions, and other procedures during the assigned shift.
Cleans equipment and completes oxygen rounds.
Demonstrates proficiency in all assigned procedures, understanding their performance, side effects, rationale, and physiology.
Documents patient assessments and procedures in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) per hospital policy.
Manages mechanical ventilators (invasive and non-invasive): setup, troubleshooting, adjusting parameters, and recommending weaning methods.
Follows hospital protocols for receiving doctor’s orders, including verbal and phone orders.
Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures.
Applies infection control practices consistently.
Responds effectively to emergencies.
Demonstrates competency in arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling.
Ensures proper maintenance of respiratory equipment (e.g., filling humidifiers, draining tubing).
Stays updated on respiratory care innovations through literature and continuing education.
Responds to all Code Blue calls and assists per ACLS, PALS, and NRP guidelines.
May perform Electroencephalogram (EEG) procedures.
May conduct pulmonary function studies and breathing capacity tests.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities Keeps Med/Surg, ER, ICU, and Pediatric supply areas stocked with necessary respiratory equipment.
Ensures crash carts in all units are supplied with AMBU bags.
Supports healthcare team workflow and delivery of care.
Education, Knowledge, Abilities, Experience, and Skills Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy program (unless licensed under the California Respiratory Care Act of 1982 grandfather clause).
NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapy (CRT) credential required.
NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential preferred.
Licenses and Certifications Current California Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
Flexibility is essential; you must be available for all shifts, including days, nights, mid-shifts, and weekends.
