The RN Critical Care Specialist is a technical specialist trained to manage the ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) system and the clinical needs of patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed, ECMO-trained physician. This includes the management and monitoring of the ECMO machine, as well as circuit management and medical and mechanical emergencies. This role will care for open-heart surgery patients as assigned and manage other extracorporeal and critical care devices, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), Impella, and balloon pumps. Works closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care and ensure the best outcomes for critically ill patients. Accountabilities 1. Manage and monitor ECMO machines and circuits, ensuring proper functioning and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.2. Assess and evaluate patient physiological and hemodynamic statuses, making appropriate adjustments to ECMO settings and flow rates to maintain normal body functions.3. Administer medications, blood products, and other treatments specific to ECMO therapy.4. Perform frequent, complex assessments of patients, including vital signs, laboratory values, and neurological statuses.5. Collaborate with physicians, Respiratory Care Practitioners, Perfusionists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients on ECMO.6. Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families regarding the ECMO procedure, equipment, and anticipated outcomes.7. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research related to ECMO therapy.8. Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes.9. Provide care to critically ill patients, including open-heart surgery patients, as assigned.10. Manage extracorporeal devices, such as CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy).11. Manage pump devices, such as Impella and Balloon pumps.12. Provide education to patients and staff related to devices or clinical needs/care of critically ill patients.13. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education • High School Diploma, High School Equivalency (HSE) or Completion of a CHS Approved Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Certificate required• Bachelor's Degree or higher in a healthcare-related field OR maintains national certification related to nursing specialty requiredo Healthcare-related degrees may be subject to approval by the ACNO/CNO group prior to approvalo Completion of ECMO Management training course with documented necessary skills as an ECMO Specialist that is validated by the Medical Director within 180 days of hire or transfer into position requiredo Completion of training on CRRT, balloon pumps, and Impella within 180 days of hire or transfer into position required
Experience • 6 months of open heart experience required• Consistent demonstration of proficient clinical nursing practice proficiency required• Experience in critical care, with at least one year of ECMO experience required
Licenses and Certifications • RN - Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work within the state of California required• BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required• NATIONAL - National Certification related to specialty and applicable to role (if qualifying with this option) required• One of the following is preferredo CCRN - Certified Critical Care Registered Nurseo CES-A - Adult Certified ECMO Specialist Other Qualifications / Notes Refer to the department’s specific requirements, orientation skills checklists, and competencies
