DEFINITION:
Under close supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semiskilled labor and maintenance tasks; and performs other related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to provide a representative list of the various types of work that may be performed. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job class, and incumbents may expect to perform other related similar duties.
Digs ditches, trenches and post holes; backfills trenches; loads and unloads dirt and construction materials. Assists journey level maintenance workers in various street maintenance projects, as assigned. Assists in set up, break down, and traffic control for city sponsored special events. Assists other skilled workers in a variety of crafts and trades; may act as flag person when working on city streets; may drive city vehicles, as assigned. Tactfully respond to citizen inquiries and/or complaints. Maintains assigned city vehicles. Assists with storm drain channel cleanup. Open all city parks and assist the public. Maintain and clean park restrooms; manage public littering, manage graffiti, clean up trash, and take out trash bins. Maintain irrigation and landscaping. Inspects and maintains all parks and playgrounds. Participates in cross-training and provides back up to other internal staff. Establishes positive working relationships with city staff and the general public. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
QUALIFICATIONS : Knowledge of : Uses and purposes of common construction and maintenance tools and equipment; basic computer skills; geography of the City of Cudahy.
Ability to: Perform moderate to heavy manual labor (depending on assignment); perform unskilled and limited skilled office, maintenance, and operational tasks in a variety of wastewater activities; operate a computer and basic software; understand and carry out oral and written instruction.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that may provide the required knowledge, ability, and skills is qualifying. A typical way is graduation from high school or equivalent; and six (6) months of experience in construction and maintenance is highly desirable. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable, but not required.
Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license from the State of California.

While performing the duties of this classification, an incumbent regularly requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, while also reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The position entails working in situations that may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, electrical shock, or mechanical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, drive motorized vehicles, operate in heavy vehicle traffic conditions, and often work with constant interruptions. RETIREMENT PLAN: The City contributes towards a retirement plan for all hourly part-time employees through the Accumulation Program for Part-time and Limited-service Employees (The APPLE Plan). The City contributes 3.75% of the employee's salary as deferred compensation. Additionally, employees contribute 3.75% of salary towards this program on a pre-tax basis.
SICK LEAVE: Hourly part-time employees annually receive 24 hours of paid sick leave. Hourly part-time employees may accrue up to a maximum of 48 sick leave hours, but may only use a maximum of 24 sick leave hours during the calendar year. 01
