About Our Investigative Reporter II Role: The Investigative Reporter II will play a critical role in developing in-depth investigative stories for Audiochuck’s true crime productions. This position requires strong investigative skills, experience in uncovering new information, and the ability to balance objective reporting with empathy in sensitive cases. The ideal candidate is highly self-sufficient and adept at working with public records, interviews, and legal documentation to produce compelling, fact-driven stories. Ability to write, feature length, magazine style investigative pieces. (long form narrative)
What You’ll Do: Report original enterprise stories in the true crime space that inform, engage, and drive impact
Independently investigate and produce long-form, magazine-style narratives (written for the ear and eye)
Deliver world-class, emotionally resonant storytelling to a large, loyal audience
Research thoroughly using public records, FOIA requests, court documents, interviews, and data analysis
Write and refine investigative scripts and stories that are both factually airtight and emotionally compelling
Conduct sensitive interviews and build trusted relationships with sources
Serve as a key advocate within the company for truth, transparency, and justice
Stay current on public corruption, government investigations, and legal matters affecting your stories
Submit and manage FOIA requests and conduct deep-dive data reviews
Work closely with legal teams to ensure content is accurate and legally sound
Balance multiple stories at different stages of development while meeting tight production deadlines
Travel as needed for on-the-ground reporting (approximately 20% of the time)
Support and participate in advocacy efforts related to your investigations
Collaborate with production teams to translate your investigations into compelling podcast content
Be open to learning new tools and workflows in a multimedia newsroom environment
What You Will Bring to the Table: Minimum 5 years of investigative journalism experience (in podcasting, print, digital, or broadcast)
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field (Master’s degree a plus)
A strong portfolio that includes at least one investigative piece over 3,000 words or a 30-minute produced feature; submissions must demonstrate original reporting and investigative rigor
Ability to uncover and synthesize complex information for a general audience
Proven experience navigating public records, FOIA processes, and legal filings
Strong understanding of media ethics and legal considerations in investigative reporting
Ability to write for both print and audio formats with clarity, empathy, and impact
Skilled interviewer with a demonstrated ability to secure difficult or high-stakes interviews
Experience covering legal systems, government accountability, or systemic injustice preferred
Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision
Comfortable working with production management software and tools (or willing to learn)
Highly collaborative mindset with the ability to work across editorial, legal, and production teams
Self-starter with initiative and a passion for storytelling that makes a difference

The base salary for this role is between $70,000 and $100,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
