We are seeking a talented GIS Development Scientist to support the Office of Coastal Survey (OCS), the national authority on hydrography. This is more than a job. About your role As a key member of the Hydrographic Surveys Division (HSD) team, you will be a driving force in modernizing the entire lifecycle of hydrographic data. You will be the technical expert who turns complex scientific challenges into elegant, automated solutions. Designing the Future: Architecting and developing automated workflows that streamline how we process massive bathymetric datasets, from ship to shore. Coding for Science: Writing Python scripts, developing models, and building applications to analyze and visualize seafloor data, ensuring its accuracy for official nautical charts. Solving Complex Puzzles: Diving into diverse hydrographic data formats and relational databases to manage, manipulate, and optimize our most critical data assets. Driving Innovation: Identifying new opportunities to apply GIS tools, remote sensing techniques, and software development best practices to solve long-standing challenges in ocean mapping. Collaborating with Experts: Working alongside leading NOAA scientists and engineers in a dynamic environment to share knowledge and develop the next generation of hydrographic standards. What You Bring to the Team You are a problem-solver at heart, with a passion for both the science of our oceans and the technology used to explore them. You are meticulous, curious, and driven to create better, more efficient systems. Required Experience & Skills: 5+ years of relevant GIS experience, with a strong portfolio in computer mapping and hydrographic applications. A deep understanding of hydrographic science, from acoustic/optic data acquisition systems to bathymetric data formats and the principles of ocean mapping. Expertise in data management, relational databases, and database development. Proven ability to identify opportunities for automation and workflow development. A sharp, critical thinker with meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to thrive both independently and in a collaborative team environment. A Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Marine Science, Engineering, Oceanography, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
