FRONT OFFICE ASSISTANT

Assists and coordinates the overall front office operation of the Cardiopulmonary Department. Greets, instructs, directs and schedules patients and visitors. Serves as a liaison between patients and medical staff. Ensures all registrations are timely and accurate and maintains best practices for overall success of the department and organization. Is also responsible for scheduling, charge entry, referrals, calls for authorizations from insurance companies, if necessary, fills out appropriate referral forms.
Education and Formal Training: 1-2 years college or equivalent work experience in a similar work area with emphasis on billing and medical terminology.
Work Experience: Ten (10) years' work experience, preferably in a medical office setting. Management experience required. Knowledge of medical terminology desirable. Familiarity with word processing and computer keyboard.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families, and co-workers at all times. Must have thorough knowledge of billing, and collection regulations, as well as generally accepted accounting principles. Must be proficient in the use of computers, 10 key, faxes, and copiers. Must be able to communicate, both in writing and verbally, with all levels of employees and the Board of Trustees. Must be able to travel overnight by auto and air at least 1% of the time. Must be able to read, interpret, and explain legal documents, regulations, and statues. Must have good understanding of Quality Improvement methodologies. Must be able to bend, lift, push, stand, kneel, and carry at least 35 pounds. Must develop knowledge of current hospital emergency policies and procedures, fire, safety, disaster, and infection control policies.
