Job Description

We are currently seeking a Field Application Scientist/Specialist I to join our US headquarters in Irvine, CA. In this role, the Field Application Scientist (FAS) Level 1 will play a vital part in supporting customers by delivering expert application support, instrument installation, validation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and training. Acting as a technical liaison between customers and internal teams, the FAS ensures successful implementation of BioDot products while fostering strong professional relationships.
This position also supports product development and continuous improvement initiatives and assists sales through product demonstrations, feasibility studies, and upselling of service contracts and spare parts. Based primarily in-house with 50–75% travel, the FAS will support advanced robotic automation solutions through installations, training, feasibility testing, demos, on-site technical support, and application development. The position reports to the Head of Applications or Applications Supervisor.
Roles and Responsibilities
Assist in the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, andpreventative maintenanceof BioDot instrumentation, including mechanical, electrical, and liquid handling systems, both at customer sites and internally.
Perform Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ), as well as participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT) under supervision.
Plan and conduct feasibility testing to evaluate new applications and optimize existing processes, analyzing experimental data and presenting findings to internal teams and customers.
Prepare and document detailed application notes, best practice protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to support customer workflows and internal knowledge sharing.
Deliver timely and professional technical support to customers through multiple channels including phone, email, and support ticket systems (e.g., FreshDesk), escalating complex issues as appropriate.
Conduct product demonstrations for customers and internal stakeholders, highlighting key instrument features and application capabilities.
Facilitate hands-on training sessions for new employees and customers on instrument operation, maintenance, software functionality, and applications, utilizing prepared training materials and protocols.
Develop, adapt, and troubleshoot application-specific protocols, including integration with third-party devices, under guidance from senior team members.
Optimize instrument performance focusing on liquid handling precision, camera system calibration, and software controls.
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including design, engineering, production, sales, and service personnel to resolve customer issues and support product development.
Independently manage assigned customer interactions and support tickets, ensuring customer satisfaction by helping them achieve their goals within BioDot’s quality and service standards.
Identify opportunities forupselling service contracts and spare parts, working in partnership with the sales team to enhance customer value and company revenue.
Participate in sales support activities including product demonstrations, technical presentations, trade shows, and conferences by assisting with setup, presentation delivery, and lead generation efforts.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of customer interactions, site visits, application support, feasibility tests, FATs, preventative maintenance, and training activities within company databases and reporting tools.
Demonstrate a proactive attitude toward continuous learning and process improvement by contributing ideas to improve workflows, instrumentation, and customer support processes.
Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, maintaining professional relationships with customers, coworkers, and stakeholders to foster collaboration and customer loyalty.
Adhere to company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements in all activities.
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required.
Master’s or Doctorate degree preferred.
Experience:
2 to 5 years of experience with analytical instrumentation, laboratory automation, electronics, mechanical engineering, or computer systems.
Preferred 3 to 5 years of experience programming and scripting for liquid handling or automation platforms.
Experience in high-throughput laboratory environments is a plus.
Skilled in experimental design, data analysis, and technical report preparation.
Skills and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong customer interaction abilities.
Proficient in standard laboratory practices and software, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Windows Explorer, Google Docs, vendor-supplied or custom-developed LIS, and help desk/database tools.
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and make technical decisions under pressure.
Other Requirements:
Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 50–75%.
Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Must successfully pass a civil and criminal background check and drug screening.
Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor as required.
Occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force.
Normal visual acuity required for reading instructions and computer screens.
Normal hearing ability required for understanding verbal instructions.
Work primarily in an office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and physical hazards on the manufacturing floor.
Must be capable of wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
The compensation range for this role is $80,000-$100,000 depending on skills and experience. This role is eligible for participation in the company's discretionary bonus program.
