Court Clerks are responsible for receiving, processing, maintaining, and safeguarding legal and financial records and monies for a municipal or county court to ensure all cases can be processed in an effective and efficient manner. Employees in this job class record judicial activities, complete court and legal documents, file and maintain documents, and conduct research. Work includes verifying completeness of legal documents where accuracy and timeliness are of critical importance. Work is performed in an office or courtroom setting.

The pay range for this job varies depending upon the Merit System employing agency.
Bessemer: $15.09 - $23.42
Birmingham: $15.42 - $23.92
Jefferson County: $17.13 - $26.57

Minimum qualifications include completing and passing all parts of the examination process to be considered eligible for employment.
Typical job duties include:
- Providing service to internal and/or external customers.
- Communicating and collaborating with various parties and organizations by responding to inquiries, tracking internal and external communications, and drafting correspondence to disseminate and receive information related to department/organization activity.
- Balancing cash drawer by counting and totaling cash, checks, and credit card payments as well as comparing the total to printouts/reports and submitting cash drawer totals and receipt printouts to the appropriate department in order to prevent shortages due to inaccurate cash handling or theft.
- Furnishing certified copies of documents as requested to interested parties.
- Receiving, verifying, and recording receipt of legal documents physically and/or electronically for compliance with court rules and laws.
- Editing data for accuracy and completeness.
- Reviewing maps for accuracy, legibility, and quality.
- Attending conferences, seminars, certification courses, and workshops to maintain current industry-specific knowledge, board specialty certifications, and/or obtain current continuing education units (CEUs) to maintain industry compliance.
Physical demands include sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
Work environment is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting. Job may require working in an office environment. Work involves use of standard office equipment (e.g., computer, phone, copier). Job may require working on a computer, exposed to glare and/or PC light. Job may require working with angry/irate customers or citizens. Job may require working with/providing services to an indigent population.
