Description

Hampden-Sydney College is accepting applications for a Controller and Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance. Reporting to the Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance, the Controller and Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance (Controller/AVP) oversees a Business Office team that is responsible for the College's financial operations, reporting, budgeting, and compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. The Controller/AVP and Business Office team members contribute to the development and implementation of financial policies and strategies that align with the institution's mission, values, and long-term goals and ensures that the College's resources are safeguarded and managed effectively. The Controller/AVP provides strategic leadership and long and short-term financial planning and resource allocation for the College's operations and its auxiliary services, as well as guidance to its employees.

Duties
Supports the development and implementation of a financial strategy that aligns with the College's goals and priorities. Oversees a Business Office team that collaborates with the Vice President and other members of the College's leadership team in administering financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, financial monitoring and reporting, and tax return preparation in support of College priorities. Assists the Vice President in timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Provides financial analysis and insights to support decision-making by the senior leadership team, including variance analysis, trend forecasting, and scenario planning.

Oversees the development and management of the College's annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the Vice President and the senior leadership team. Maximizes the deployment of revenues provided by tuition and fees, the College's endowment, and its annual fundraising efforts. Offers long and short-term financial planning and forecasting and efficient resource allocation to meet institutional priorities. Monitors financial performance, provides analysis, and recommends adjustments to optimize the College's financial position. Along with the Vice President, the Controller/AVP has primary responsibility for ensuring that the College operates with a balanced operating budget.

Monitors cash flow and liquidity to ensure the availability of funds for operational needs and strategic initiatives. Optimizes cash management strategies to maximize interest income and minimize borrowing costs.

Assists the Vice President in managing the College's endowment and debt portfolio in compliance with any debt covenants and reporting obligations.

Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, accounting standards, and internal financial policies. Develops and oversees robust internal controls to safeguard College assets, manage risk, and maintain financial integrity. Collaborates with external auditors and regulatory bodies to ensure successful financial audits and compliance reviews.

Controller/AVP and Business Office team members collaborate with the Vice President and other senior leaders to advance strategic initiatives, including capital projects, resource optimization, and revenue generation. Provides financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership on key financial decisions, risks, and opportunities. Serves as a liaison between the Business Affairs and Finance division and other departments, fostering strong relationships to achieve institutional goals.

Assists the Vice President as directed in overseeing the College's auxiliary operations, including its Campus Store, food service, and rental properties. Also assists the Vice President as directed in overseeing the financial management of the College's insurance policies, camps and summer programs, and utilities.

Along with the Vice President, develops and manages the department's budget.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree and CPA certification required. A minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in business and financial management and significant leadership experience required.
