Primary Objective of Position: The health paraprofessional provides delegated health services, procedures, and support to medically complex students and/or students with chronic medical conditions to promote their health and wellbeing so they can be successful learners.
Job Responsibilities: Utilizes nursing physical assessment skills to perform focused assessments of student or staff health concerns, manage these concerns using nursing methods within scope of practice, report significant findings or concerns to Licensed School Nurse. Provides ongoing observation and feedback on student health conditions to LSN. Records notes in school electronic record or health file. Identifies psychosocial, mental health concerns with students, interviews students and observes behaviors, assesses need, consults with LSN, assists LSN with monitoring for medication adverse effects, and consults with other school or professional staff in managing these students. Records notes in school electronic record or health file. Assists with training unlicensed personnel with specific procedures, with supervision from LSN. Participates in plan of care for students with chronic medical conditions, including medication administration, nursing procedures and treatments, under the supervision of the LSN. Maintains and updates health office records, including medication logs, daily visit logs, student health records, and student immunization records. Performs routine and emergency first aid care to students and staff with injuries and illnesses. Assists with Health Screening as needed. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications: Minnesota Licensed Practical Nurse (current LPN license) or Registered Nurse (RN) license Current first aid and CPR certification. Evidence of successful experiences working with students and understanding their needs. Experience working with school age children preferred. Experience working in a clinical setting preferred. Knowledgeable in the practice of nursing Skills of physical and emotional assessment and nursing procedures Evidence of basic word processing, PC and clerical skills. Evidence of ability to work in a team environment. Evidence of willingness to participate in ongoing training in health and technology. Evidence of the ability to respect, protect and maintain the confidentiality of students, staff, and families. Evidence of a willingness to work under supervision of Director of Health Services, LSN, and building principal. Evidence of the ability to organize, prioritize, meet deadlines, and work with constant interruptions. Evidence of excellent human relations, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
