Summary Our client, a dynamic and growth-focused general contractor, is seeking a strategic and highly experienced Chief Estimator to lead their estimating department. This role is pivotal in shaping scalable systems and driving competitiveness across public and private sector bids. The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of leadership, deep industry knowledge, and a forward-thinking mindset to lead a collaborative team through transformation—without compromising its cultural fabric. This position plays a critical role in enhancing preconstruction operations and establishing strong subcontractor relationships, especially in the Milwaukee market. Duties Lead and manage the estimating department, including mentoring three direct reports (Assistant Estimator, General Contractor Estimator, and Self-Perform Estimator).
Oversee the preparation and execution of accurate, competitive bids for both hard bid/public sector and conceptual/private sector projects.
Assess, refine, and implement estimating processes and scalable systems to support growth and long-term efficiency.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors to improve bid competitiveness.
Guide the integration of best practices for general contracting, design-build, and construction management estimating workflows.
Champion the adoption of upgraded estimating tools and technologies, including software transitions.
Serve as a critical liaison between preconstruction and operations, fostering trust and collaboration.
Take initiative in resolving issues proactively and driving change without disrupting team cohesion.
Conduct regular site visits as needed.
Qualifications Must Haves: Minimum of 10 years of estimating experience in general contracting.
Demonstrated ability to estimate both public (hard bid) and private (conceptual) projects.
Proven management experience with at least three direct reports in a construction estimating team.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and openness to leading technology/software advancements.
Desired: Deep understanding of public procurement rules and strategic nuances.
Experience in designing and implementing scalable systems in a construction environment undergoing growth.
Familiarity with subcontractor dynamics and pricing structures in the Milwaukee-area market
