Senior Benefits Accountant

Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid Schedule)

About the Role: We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our client's Benefits Accounting team. This role will focus on accounting and reporting activities related to employee benefits, ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting standards. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in accounting, with experience in benefits accounting, financial reporting, or technical accounting, and will serve as a key partner in delivering accurate and timely financial information.

Qualifications

  • Perform and review accounting and reporting for employee benefit plans, ensuring compliance with GAAP, ASC guidance, and company policies.
  • Apply technical accounting knowledge to benefits-related matters, including pension and postretirement benefit obligations.
  • Support preparation and review of financial statements, disclosures, and reporting schedules related to employee benefits.
  • Assist with interpreting and applying ASC Topics 710718, SEC requirements, and FERC accounting guidelines, as applicable.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and external auditors to ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance in benefits accounting.
  • Analyze complex accounting data, identify relevant issues, and recommend effective solutions.
  • Prepare and present financial data using advanced Excel functions and reporting tools.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve processes and maintain accurate records.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline required (an additional 4 years of relevant experience may substitute).
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience required.
  • Experience in benefits accounting, technical accounting, or financial reporting preferred.
  • CPA license preferred (a Master's degree or CPA may substitute for 1 year of required experience).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of GAAP; experience with ASC Topics 710718 strongly preferred.
  • General knowledge of SEC regulations, filing requirements, and FERC uniform system of accounts preferred.
  • Understanding of the regulated energy industry preferred.
  • Proficiency with PeopleSoft General Ledger and reporting tools.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; strong knowledge of Word and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to explain complex information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven analytical ability and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary $90K and up, based on experience, qualifications, location, and certifications. The salary is subject to change and may be modified at any time.
