General Description
The Orange County Fleet Services Department has two openings for an Automotive Mechanic in the Fleet Services Division.
An employee of this class is primarily responsible for performing complex repairs and preventive maintenance on a predetermined schedule to County vehicles (passenger vehicles, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, transit vehicles, and mobile dental clinic), generators, trailers, lawn equipment and other mechanical equipment.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Senior Automotive Mechanic with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties. This position does not supervise staff. Does related work as required.
* This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Background Check is required. Fitness for Duty Assessment is required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in automotive systems technology AND two (2) years of automotive and equipment repair experience, OR
Graduation from an accredited vocational tech program with a Diploma in Automotive Repair AND two (2) years of automotive and equipment repair experience, OR
Graduation from an accredited vocational tech program with a Gasoline Technology Diploma or Diesel Technology Diploma AND two (2) years of diesel automotive repair experience or a combination of diesel automotive repair experience and gasoline vehicle repair experience , OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a background and preemployment checks. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared. This classification is considered safety sensitive, and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Must be certified as a NC On Board Diagnostics (OBD) II upon hire OR obtain within six-months of hire.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s) is preferred.
May be required to obtain additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the Fleet Services Director.
Must be available to perform on-call duties, as needed and provide on-call response to after-hours emergencies, on-call rotation, inclement weather conditions and emergency community response.
