Role Summary The Animal Care Technician II will engage in the basic animal husbandry, routine care, and maintenance of animal living quarters, while collaborating with research staff to maintain certain study related tasks The Animal Care Technician II will hone skills in other areas of decision making, coachability, and being a team player as they begin to mentor and train other Animal Care Technicians in animal behavior, technical skills, and with minimal data management.
Role Responsibilities Perform daily health observations to ensure quality, health, and wellbeing of research animals. Clean and set up enclosures, pens, trays, and equipment to keep animals clean and comfortable. Feed, water and enrich the lives of the animals through positive human interaction, which may include distribution of edible enrichment and manipulanda. Handle and restrain animals as needed to facilitate necessary animal care functions. Under general guidance, use accepted practices to establish and implement procedures for animal care, housing, husbandry, and maintenance programs. Receive animals into the facility and maintain accompanying animal paperwork as well as arrival data. Assist in animal inventory and have the ability to prepare reports on animal inventory data. Will work towards subject matter expertise and will train others in tasks related to the department. Participate in general vivarium maintenance activities, including the pest control program. Ability to collect and record data on both paper and in a laboratory information management system (LIMs) in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) mainly related to colony studies Assist in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements related to the care of the laboratory animals. Data collection may vary from detailed observations, body weights, and blood collection. May serve as a coordinator for colony animal populations. Other duties as assigned.
Role Requirements High School Diploma/GED required Minimum of 1 years of experience with care of animals in a research setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained ALAT/LAT Preferred Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications

Special Requirements This role works predominately in a laboratory setting. There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of and/or exposure to animal tissues and zoonotic organisms. Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 respirators. Physical activity includes lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing, and ascending a ladder without restriction. Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including but not limited to evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts with short notice.
