Salary: $17-$19 Are you passionate about animals, calm under pressure, and ready to roll up your sleeves in a fast-paced shelter environment? The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) is looking for a dedicated, compassionate team player to join us as an Animal Care Technician (ACT).
ACTs are the heart of daily shelter operations, ensuring animals receive high-quality care while delivering excellent customer service to the public. From processing adoptions to administering medications and assisting with intake and outcome procedures, ACTs serve as the bridge between the front and back of house, to keep things running smoothly and animals well cared for.
This is a great role for someone who loves variety in their day, isnt afraid to get their hands (or shoes) dirty, and finds joy in supporting both pets and the people who love them.
Key Responsibilities: Customer Service & Shelter Operations (50%) Assist visitors, adopters, and community members with warmth and professionalism. Process adoptions, reclaims, lost/found reports, and pet licensing. Help animals by supporting intakes, transfers, and outcomes.
Animal Care & Enrichment (30%) Clean, feed, and monitor animals according to HSCO protocols. Administer medications and basic medical care as directed. Support daily enrichment, including walks, play groups, and kennel setups. Observe animal behavior and health, reporting concerns promptly.
Team Communication & Data Entry (20%) Ensure accurate recordkeeping in PetPoint for all animals in care. Maintain clear and timely communication across departments. Support HSCOs mission and operations through collaboration and consistency.
What Makes a Great ACT: Thrives in a fast-paced, physically active role. Communicates clearly and respectfully with both people and pets. Learns best by doing and welcomes hands-on training. Comfortable handling animals of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Willing to work one weekend day per week and rotate holiday coverage. Detail-oriented, dependable, and able to follow protocols and finish tasks.
Qualifications: Experience in animal care, customer service, or sheltering is a plus but well train the right person! Must be 21+ years old with a valid drivers license and reliable transportation. Basic computer skills and willingness to learn shelter software (PetPoint). Fear Free certification or willingness to obtain is preferred.
