GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the A.S. Graphics Manager, the Web Developer - utilizing a strong understanding of front-end development and integration of visual design with functional code - is responsible for developing and maintaining responsive, accessible websites and web applications. The developer will implement technical solutions using modern web languages and tools, while ensuring alignment with organizational branding and communication goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions Develops responsive, accessible websites using development languages related tools on a Mac platform. Builds web pages from approved design assets, including wireframes, mockups, or high-fidelity prototypes, depending on project requirements. Collaborates with graphic designers to ensure visually accurate and high-quality implementation of approved design assets, prototypes, and branding guidelines. Maintains, updates, and troubleshoots existing web pages and web-based tools as needed. Responsible for implementing functional, standards-compliant code that performs across devices and browsers. Optimizes websites for speed, SEO, and best practices in caching, image handling, and asset loading. Applies web security principles to prevent vulnerabilities and protect user data. Collaborates on the design and implementation of database-driven features, including writing mySQL queries, integrating with PHP-based systems, and ensuring secure, optimized data handling. Creates and updates custom content management systems or templates to support department and program needs. Conducts accessibility and quality assurance testing using browser tools and diagnostic software to validate compliance and usability. Creates, manages, and optimizes HTML5 emails for A.S. websites, ensuring reliable delivery and consistent rendering across major email clients and devices. Provides technical guidance and consultation to A.S. departments and staff regarding digital best practices, and web publishing standards. Creates test sites to review updates, collect feedback, and ensure quality before deployment. Works with the Graphics Manager to advise A.S. staff on web project timelines, feasibility, and technical requirements. Collaborates directly with department/program teams on assigned projects. Participates in creative planning sessions, marketing strategy discussions, and other collaborative meetings related to digital media and communications. Maintains documentation and organizational systems for web assets, codebases, and related resources. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties and supports other graphics and digital media tasks as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education: Certificate from accredited Graphics, Web or Digital Media Vocational program or AA Web Design degree from accredited Community College required. Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in working in a Front-end Developer or Full-Stack Web Designer position. Minimum of three years of experience using various markup languages. Trainings: Sexual Harassment Prevention for Supervisors (Must be completed within 30 days of hire) Workplace Violence Prevention (Must be completed within 30 days of hire) Data Security & Privacy (Must be completed within 30 days of hire) Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire) Opioid Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire) PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS Must professionally represent Associated Students and San Diego State University at all times Must be able to perform a high level of customer service in a diverse and constantly changing environment Demonstrated success in mentoring work teams on diverse functions, complying with organizational policies and procedures and supporting change within an organization Commitment to values of diversity, multi-culturalism, and higher education KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Excellent understanding of the entire web development process Knowledge of JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, CSS, Bootstrap, PHP, Apache, HTML5 and mySQL Experience developing and maintaining custom content management systems Basic understanding of web security practices, including input sanitization and protection against common vulnerabilities Basic understanding of web testing practices, including browser testing, performance auditing, and debugging tools Ability to debug and optimize code Familiarity with web animation libraries such as GSAP or Anime Proficiency in writing and optimizing database queries. Ability to develop mobile-responsive, performance-optimized websites compatible across major browsers. Ability to create, manage and optimize HTML emails and website-generated emails. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and experience working with wireframing/design tools like Adobe XD or Figma, with consideration for UI/UX and accessibility standards and SEO principles, is preferred Knowledge of ADA compliance standards, including Section 508 and WCAG 2.1+ guidelines, is preferred Experience integrating third-party APIs and working with RESTful services, is preferred Strong judgment, excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to prioritize and multitask in a dynamic environment Self-motivated and proactive team player, comfortable working with a diverse staff in a dynamic, fast-paced environment Personable, efficient, flexible and communicative Ability to effectively analyze verbal and written instructions Ability to receive and accept design/development feedback while working cooperatively to produce the final product SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a regular, full-time position with expected hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours and days.
COMPENSATION
Starting range: $23.96 - $29.35 per hour

General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing and walking around campus. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.

This position requires the individual to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. This person will also spend time filing and have to do some lifting of supplies and materials from time to time, including banker boxes and files.
