Short Description:
The Respiratory Therapist provides high-quality patient care through intensive respiratory therapy and patient transport, within the scope of professional licensure and with minimal supervision.
Complete Description:
Provides respiratory care by evaluating patients and recommending treatment plans.
Explains treatment purposes, procedures, tests, and equipment to patients and provides discharge education.
Administers physician-prescribed routine and complex respiratory treatments using various ventilatory equipment (invasive and non-invasive), oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizers to deliver medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation.
Performs chest physiotherapy using approved equipment to promote secretion clearance.
Conducts suctioning via oropharyngeal, nasal, or tracheal methods as needed.
Monitors patients using oximetry and capnography per policy.
Reviews patient chest X-rays and determines the need for further evaluation.
Performs 12-lead EKGs and recognizes basic arrhythmias.
Conducts pulmonary function studies (e.g., NIF, VC) according to protocol.
Assists with respiratory-related procedures such as bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, and chest tube placement.
Performs drainage via PleurX catheters or similar devices where indicated.
Provides tracheostomy care, including emergent and non-emergent tracheostomy tube insertion/removal per policy.
Performs arterial blood gas punctures; monitors, records, and reports results to assess ventilation effectiveness.
For hospitals with moderate-complexity labs: Follows laboratory protocols for specimen handling, equipment use, documentation, quality controls, and maintenance (Pre-analytic, Analytic, Post-analytic phases).
Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation per BLS and ACLS guidelines.
Inserts and removes endotracheal tubes using freehand techniques or video laryngoscopy as appropriate.
Sets up, tests, operates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilators and other respiratory equipment.
Assists in coordinating preventive maintenance and repairs for respiratory equipment.
Documents all treatments and patient responses in respiratory care records and patient charts, including pre- and post-treatment assessments.
Effectively communicates with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding treatment plans and patient progress.
Provides thorough shift-to-shift handoff reports during walking rounds.
Accurately enters and verifies respiratory therapy charges and corrects errors as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
