Job Description: Therapeutic Recreation Aide
Department: Activities
Supervisor: Activities Director
Availability: Full-time, Part- time
Position Summary: Activities Aide is responsible for the implementation and delivery of activities to the residents of Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. This position also includes assisting in the development of activities to meet the needs and interests of the residents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating a daily schedule of activities to include but not limited to:
Groups : Socials, music, religious, current events, physical exercise, educational, special events, sports, seasonal events, supportive, maintenance, empowerment, ethnic and small group programs.
Individual : Visiting with non-responsive residents, task oriented programs, sensory programs, environmental stimulation programs, physical exercise, ethnic, seasonal activity and resident life skills .
Independent : Continuation of life skills, hobbies, social opportunities, religious, family involvement, and other leisure activities that the resident is indicating a desire to perform.
2. Attend continuing education sessions, mandatory in-services within and outside the facility when appropriate to maintain certification as well as to enhance skills and knowledge of activities
3. Assist with coordination activities with other departments and community groups.
4. Transport residents in a safe and orderly manner to and from activities including use of elevators.
5. Motivate, encourage, inform and invite all residents to attend programs of their choice
6. Utilize time management skills for planning and implementing programs:
Time to secure materials and equipment
Preparation of materials and equipment
Preparation of environment for the activity
Maintain all supplies, materials and equipment
Clean materials equipment and storage areas
Reset areas after program has ended
7. Maintain safety in all areas where activities programs are being conducted.
8. Develop independent activity programs for residents to use during non- group times, upon request of resident, and special event/holidays
9. Supervise activity volunteers and assess performance.
10. Assist with coordination of activity calendar
11. Deliver and post monthly calendars to all resident rooms, departments and reception areas
12. Decorate facility for seasonal events, including but not limited to:
Bulletin boards
Lounge areas
Activity areas
Resident rooms
13. Assist in implementing special events, outings, evening parties and outings.
14. Assist with implementation of traveling clothing services
15. Shop for supplies and materials for the delivery of activities services
when needed.
16. Working knowledge of audio-visual equipment
17. Flexible hours to include evening, weekends and early mornings as
assigned.
18. Coordinate mail delivery to residents.
19. Program coordination for shopping for residents.
20. Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Minimum requirements, including high school diploma or GED. AAC
preferred.
Experience in activities in long term care
Skills:
Aptitude in planning, implementing and evaluating group, individual and
independent activity programming with residents
Good written and verbal skills
An understanding of physical and mental abilities of long term care
residents.
Time management and resource utilization skills.
Good interpersonal skills to interact and communicate with staff, families
and residents
Experience:
At least 1 year in a long term care setting delivering activities services.
Additional:
Ability to transport residents in wheelchair, climb ladders, lift 50 pounds,
and move equipment (i.e. piano, carts, tables, chairs)
Must be able to climb ladders to hang seasonal decorations.
Must be able to lift residents and wheelchairs
