Description: SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Health, a technician inspects commercial, residential, and public locations in the County to enforce federal, state, and county environmental health laws to safeguard the public health. This position involves field inspection work in the enforcement of environmental health laws. Employees in this job are required to exercise some independent judgment and tact to secure voluntary compliance with applicable rules and regulations. However, assistance is available for difficult or highly sensitive problems. Work is assigned and reviewed by the Director of Environmental Health for Montgomery County.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties will be assigned. · Enforcement of the Sanitary Code · Perform soil and or site evaluations, with assistance of the EHZ Director · Issues permits as directed · Write reports as directed · Investigate complaints · Provide interpretation of applicable rules and regulations · Issue written orders to correct Code or Regulation violations as assigned by the EHZ Director · Review plans, blueprints, and specifications for construction · Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public · Must have working knowledge of Word and Excel. · Use a shovel and or pick to dig holes to expose inspection lids on septic tanks · Investigate sanitation problems such as trash, rodents, and insect infestations · Investigate water pollution situations · Must be able to drive a county-owned vehicle · Collect water samples and perform water screenings · Issue permits to the general public · Administer testing and issue a license to contractors · Assist with the Animal welfare aspect of the County regulations. · Assist with office reports, compliance, research, file management, and general office duties · Must be available for call-outs Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations to the general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY: Receive, track, and deposit licensing fees and permit fees. Employee is responsible for making purchases following Montgomery County’s Procurement Policy, with prior approval from the EHZ Director.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a current driver’s license.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be familiar with ADA and Safety requirements. Must be able to talk with the public and professionally discuss their concerns. Must be a self-starter and able to work alone.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to vibration.
