Job Summary: Ensures that the scenery for each production is completed in a safe manner, on schedule, as determined in conjunction with the other members of the production team. Supervises and instructs the students working in the shop on the productions.
Duties/Responsibilities: This job description is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties or responsibility requirements. Ensure completion of scenic designs for all departmental productions using design documentation. This includes determining appropriate and safe construction methodology, distributing assignments to students, completes portions of the work that cannot be done by student labor alone, and takes necessary measures to ensure that the design will be completed on time. Supervise students in the shop by scheduling, delegating, instructing and evaluating work. This includes opening the shop, supervising the student shop assistants, providing work assignments to the volunteer student workers, as well as students enrolled in the Theatre Activity course, training students in the correct and safe use of tools and construction methods, review, sign, and process student time sheets, verifying that they have worked the hours indicated. Apprise the Theatre Activity course instructor of any problems involving students enrolled in the course. Ensures the shop is opened and closed for each work session, that all tools have been put away, and that the shop and/or stage area are clean. Ensure that the shop is kept in a safe working condition by remedying any safety problems that arise, reporting any unsafe conditions that cannot be directly remedied by him or her to the faculty designer, and arranging for the repair of broken or damaged tools. Recommends improvements and/or tools for future addition to the shop.

Ability to set goals and organize tasks for timely completion of projects. Ability to work with a variety of jobs and meet deadlines simultaneously. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for communicating effectively. Ability to teach others for training students. Ability to think logically in problem solving. Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm, orderly and accurate manner, and to complete work on time. Ability to work with a diverse group of students. Ability to supervise for delegating, training, instructing, and evaluating students. Extensive experience in carpentry. Ability, if this position is assumed in conjunction with another campus position, to report campus scheduling conflicts to all supervisor(s).
Education and Experience High school diploma and at least one year of experience working for a theatre, repertory, or stock company constructing scenery for stage productions; and one year training in scenic design and construction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises three to four student staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
