Special Education Teacher

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in providing specialized support and instruction to students with special needs. Candidates shall possess or be on track to possess NYS teaching certification in 7-12 Special Education and/or related NYS teaching certification. Starting salary, commensurate with experience, $50,444 to $68,226 plus contractual benefits.

A Special Education Teacher develops and implements individualized education programs (IEPs) to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities. Responsibilities include assessing student abilities, adapting curriculum, and providing specialized instruction in small groups or one-on-one settings. The teacher collaborates with general education staff, therapists, and parents to support academic, behavioral, and social development. They monitor progress, maintain detailed records, and adjust teaching strategies to ensure student success. Special Education Teachers also teach self-advocacy, communication, and life skills, fostering independence and confidence. They create a safe, inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and respects individual differences. The role requires strong organizational skills, patience, and the ability to differentiate instruction. Candidates must hold the required state certification in special education, demonstrate knowledge of federal and state special education laws, and possess experience or training in behavior management, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for diverse learners.
