McClatchy Media is seeking a Service Journalism Editor to join the award-winning newsroom of The Sacramento Bee and who is passionate about providing our local audience with journalism and information that helps them live their best lives. This editor will ensure the service journalism team produces timely, useful and relevant local, regional and statewide stories and videos that address readers’ questions and needs each day. The team focuses on Q&As, quick explainers and fact checks, as well as stories that highlight the best of their community. Coverage includes explainers on breaking news and major weather events, and stories that celebrate and support local engagement — such as explaining new city composting laws or polling readers for the best local pizza. The team is driven by readership growth and loyalty strategies, and uses tools such as Google Trends, Reddit and Nextdoor to surface and answer questions readers are asking at the moment. We build a culture of listening, launch reader engagement projects, and experiment with story format, vertical video and audio. The editor is based at The Sacramento Bee, and is a member of a larger team of service editors and teams based in local newsrooms across McClatchy. The ability to collaborate is a must, as this editor communicates regularly with colleagues from top newsroom editors to the analytics and audience teams. In this role, you will need to: Have strong editing and headline-writing skills, as well as excellent news judgment and journalism ethics. Perform daily execution of audience-focused journalist strategies, fueled by a team of reporters working across storytelling platforms. Coordinate story assignments, informed by search interest, social conversations and engagement journalism. Keep a content budget, and in collaboration with newsroom editors. Have a passion for the written word as well as vertical video and data. Be comfortable writing and reporting as necessary. Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy. Work well in a team environment, and communicate with colleagues using established digital channels. Regularly utilize a computer, often requiring prolonged periods of keyboarding and mouse usage. Other duties as needed. What youll bring: Editing, reporting and writing skills required. Experience with audience tools such as Google Trends, real-time analytics platforms, and NewsWhip. Ability to understand and interpret audience metrics and the tactics that move them. Education & experience: College degree or equivalent work experience. At least 3 years of local news reporting experience, preferably with editing experience. This is a hybrid remote/in-office position based at The Sacramento Bee in Sacramento, California. Sacramento is a vibrant region offering rich opportunities in journalism — it’s the state capital, home to professional sports teams Kings and A’s, ethnically diverse, and close to rivers and mountains and the recreational opportunities that help define California. The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $70,000 and $85,000. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography and local wage and hours laws.
