The Pharmacist-in-Charge at Urbandale Pharmacy will oversee daily operations for both a co-located closed-door retail pharmacy and a hospital/clinic pharmacy. They will provide medication distribution, sterile compounding, and support clinical and operational services for the multispecialty clinics and future infusion area. They will also provide retail and specialty services related to in-vitro fertilization and reproductive endocrinology medications. This role ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, manages pharmacy staff, and delivers comprehensive pharmaceutical care. It serves as a role-model/practitioner-educator for pharmacy residents, Doctor of Pharmacy students and carries out clinical practice responsibilities for the Department of Pharmaceutical Care.
Patient Care-Participating in the Provision of Pharmaceutical Care
- The Pharmacist-in-Charge provides care to patients by:
- Reviewing medication orders, monitoring therapy, and evaluating treatment plans within the electronic medical record to ensure appropriateness.
- Providing patient education on medication regimens via in-person communication or virtual platforms
- Preparing, checking and dispensing medications, including sterile compounds and hazardous drugs when performing duties on-site.
- Utilizing IV workflow technology to inspect and verify compounded sterile products.
- Working with a multidisciplinary team to address patient needs and prevent adverse drug events.
- Documenting all patient care activities and interventions in the electronic medical record which can be done through virtual means or on-site.
- Adhering to all regulatory requirements, including applicable state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards, ensuring compliance at all times. This includes appropriate upkeep of continuing education, university compliances, and department competencies regardless of work location.
Facilitates Operational Initiatives Which Lead to Enhanced Patient Care Services
- The Pharmacist-in-Charge must assume the role of patient advocate for all issues associated with drug therapy. Participation in system-wide programs intended to improve care (e.g., the Medication Use Evaluation Program and Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Program) serves as a valuable quality-of-service surveillance tool and promotes healthcare provider education. This may include:
- Reviewing medication orders, monitoring therapy, and evaluating chemotherapy protocols and treatment plans within the electronic medical record to ensure appropriateness.
- Providing patient education on chemotherapy regimens, supportive care medications and appropriate medication use via in-person communication or virtual platforms
- Preparing, checking and dispensing medications, including sterile compounds and hazardous drugs when performing duties on-site.
- Utilizing IV workflow technology to inspect and verify compounded sterile products.
- Working with a multidisciplinary team to address patient needs and prevent adverse drug events.
- Managing medication inventory for the onsite clinic.
- Documenting all patient care activities and interventions in the electronic medical record which can be done through virtual means or on-site.
- Adhering to all regulatory requirements, including applicable state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards, ensuring compliance at all times. This includes appropriate upkeep of continuing education, university compliances, and department competencies regardless of work location.
Supervisory Activities
- The Pharmacist-in-Charge will have the following duties:
- Supervising pharmacy technicians and support staff.
- Managing sterile compounding operations by providing supervision of staff who work in and access the compounding area.
- Directing daily workflow in the pharmacy.
- Developing and delivering annual performance evaluations.
Provides Educational Services:
- An important responsibility of the Pharmacist-in-Charge is the education of students, fellow staff, other healthcare providers, and patients about drugs and their appropriate use. This may include:
- Educating staff, healthcare teams, and patients about medication use.
- Presenting educational sessions and mentoring other pharmacists
- Serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.
Participates in Research:
- The Pharmacist-in-Charge participates in research activities as appropriate, including providing support for Investigational Drug Service prescriptions and orders. Precepting pharmacy resident research and the presentation and/or publication of research findings are encouraged.
Regulatory compliance:
- The Pharmacist-in-Charge is responsible for ensuring adherence to all regulatory requirements, including applicable state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards. Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring staff completion of institutional and department competencies.
- Ensuring staff demonstrate competence and are compliant with institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintaining records in accordance with applicable laws and departmental policies and conducting routine audits.
- Participating in accreditation evaluations and other regulatory inspections required for licensure.
Qualifications
Education Requirements:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree is required.
- A current license in good standing by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required prior to starting employment.
Experience Requirements:
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy practice residency OR 2 years' experience in a complex multi-disciplinary healthcare environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills are required.
- Job-related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desired Qualifications:
- Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 or PGY2 residency is highly desirable.
- Active board certification in Sterile Compounding, Ambulatory Care, or Pharmacotherapy is highly desirable.
- Previous Pharmacist-in-Charge or pharmacy manager experience is desirable.
- Job-related experience with sterile compounding, USP 797, and USP 800 is desirable.
- Immunization certification is desirable
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple stakeholders and tasks, manage details and deliver results in an environment with competing demands.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others.
