Position Summary
This position analyzes test samples drawn from various points and products throughout chemical processes for multiple companies using standard testing methods and laboratory equipment.
This is a multi-graded position based on the employee’s KSA’s and behaviors displayed.
Essential Job Functions
Laboratory Technicians could be assigned to work in Gas Chromatography Analysis (“GC”), General Analysis (“GA”), or both. Abilities within these essential duties should increase with experience, time and training.
Conducts analysis of samples from multiple processes and products
Sets up and conducts chemical experiments, tests, and analyses using techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, physical and chemical separation techniques, and microscopy
Handles GC and/or GA analysis of samples taken from active processes, completed product, process water, and raw materials
Utilizes standard laboratory equipment; trains others on equipment as abilities and knowledge increase
Reports analysis results and findings to various departments as required
Compiles results of tests and analyses; records analysis results in logs, systems, and other appropriate files
Performs Gas Chromatography Analysis
Conducts routine and special analyses of various products and samples
Assists in setting up G/C analyses and methods
Performs general analysis; analyzes service and waste water
Conducts routine tests in accordance with standard procedures and methods
Reviews methods as requested; assists in setting up general analysis methods
Assists with lab equipment settings and modifications as trained
Monitors product quality to ensure compliance to standards and specifications
Works with purchasing for spare parts, reagent and other required lab items procurement
Troubleshoots equipment as trained
Checks equipment; assists with calibration of various laboratory equipment as necessary
Provides technical support and assistance to chemists and engineers as requested
Abides by all safety procedures and practices applicable to location and position; participates in appropriate safety training; demonstrates commitment to and support of EHSS principles and values; champions safety at all times; participates in and/or leads safety teams or projects as appropriate
Performs other duties assigned by management that generally fall within the expected scope of this position

Experience & KSA’s Required
Minimum of 1 to 5 years’ laboratory experience in a petrochemical plant or similar environment
Knowledge of and experience with laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, Gas chromatography (GC), Gas Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (GS/MS) and general analysis equipment and methods
Experience in both dry and wet lab environments preferred
Ability and experience in working with batch and continuous operations in laboratory environment
Experience setting up a new laboratory and developing processes, methods, testing, etc. helpful
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and follow through on assignments
Good computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; ability to use database systems and other programs and applications used by this position and at Company
Fluent in English language including reading, writing and speaking; ability to read and write at a minimum of high school level; ability to clearly communicate to all levels in organization
Education Requirement
High school diploma or equivalent required
Technical school degree for the lab or bachelor’s degree in science area such as chemistry preferred

This position requires an employee to be in a lab environment. There will be exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous. Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location. General lab noise from equipment may be experienced. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.
