As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and air systems on various vehicles and equipment, including heavy machinery and diesel trucks. You must also be able to operate the machinery being repaired. In case of emergencies, you may be on call to assist with breakdowns. Essential Job Functions: The successful candidate will perform each essential duty satisfactorily, including but not limited to: Diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems on heavy equipment, including yellow iron machinery and diesel trucks. Performing repairs and comprehensive preventative maintenance services. Estimating time and material costs on vehicle repairs and requisitioning new parts. Conducting safety checks on vehicles. Utilizing fleet maintenance software for documentation of repairs, part usage, and repair time. Reviewing and completing repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports. Maintaining a clean and safe work area, adhering to company safety protocols and OSHA standards. Collaborating with other mechanics to complete project work. Work Environment: Working in a potentially hazardous environment with moving parts and machinery; vigilance is crucial. Entering transfer station loading/dumping areas only during breakdowns. Physically, the job may require lifting up to 50 pounds and involves frequent squatting and standing. Requirements and Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years old and legally eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver’s license is required; a CDL is a plus. Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. Experience in the sanitation or construction industry is a plus. Familiarity with computer diagnostic tools as a diesel technician is preferred. Experience troubleshooting and repairing DPF systems using diagnostic software (e.g., Premium Tech Tool, Allison transmission, Cummins, CAT, Peterbilt, and Paccar). Knowledge of applicable DOT and OSHA standards and regulations. Must be proficient in English to effectively converse with colleagues and complete documentation accurately. Must be able to meet the physical and safety demands of the position. Must possess own tools. At Interstate Waste Services, we are committed to your growth.
