Food Service Manager

Location: Montana Rescue Mission – Billings, MT
Status: Full-Time | Exempt
Reports to: Shelter Coordinator


Position Summary

Montana Rescue Mission is seeking a dedicated Food Service Manager to oversee all aspects of meal preparation and food service at our shelter and café. This role ensures that meals are nutritious, properly portioned, and meet health and safety standards. The Food Service Manager is also responsible for supervising kitchen staff, maintaining cleanliness, tracking inventory, and upholding a Christ-centered environment in alignment with our mission.


Key Responsibilities
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise food service employees.
  • Ensure timely preparation and service of high-quality, nutritious meals.
  • Plan and follow daily menus that meet health, safety, and nutritional standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, appliances, and food storage areas.
  • Inspect work areas regularly to ensure compliance with local and state food safety regulations.
  • Monitor food and supply inventory; place orders and receive deliveries as needed.
  • Maintain required documentation and assist with program reporting.
  • Ensure proper food handling, storage, and hygiene practices among all staff.
  • Collaborate with café staff and contribute to retail operations as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and ministry events.
  • Assist in transporting guests when needed (valid driver’s license required).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Qualifications

Spiritual Fit:

  • Mature Christian with a heart for ministry and service to the homeless, addicted, and mentally ill in a Christ-centered environment.

Experience:

  • Culinary degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 5 years in food preparation and cooking
  • 2+ years in large-scale food service
  • Experience in nonprofit or social services preferred


Skills:

  • Strong leadership, team collaboration, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of food safety procedures, including temperature control and foodborne illness prevention
  • Knife skills and kitchen technique proficiency
  • Basic retail experience (for café support)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; FileMaker Pro is a plus

Certifications:

  • Current Food Manager’s certification (or ability to obtain)
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or ability to obtain)

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb stairs regularly
  • Comfortable working in a ministry environment that may involve strong odors and guests in crisis
Working Conditions
  • Must be able to work in an environment where exposure to individuals struggling with homelessness, addiction, and mental illness is common.
  • Physical demands include frequent stair climbing and lifting.
