Executive Director - Duluth Co-op Hands of Christ Job Summary:
The Executive Director of Duluth Hands of Christ is the operational leader of the organization, responsible for advancing our mission to provide food, hope, and dignity to individuals and families in need—guided by Christian values of compassion, service, and justice. The Executive Director oversees strategic planning, daily operations, finances, staff, resource development, community outreach, and leadership, ensuring that all aspects of the food bank’s work reflect our faith-centered commitment to loving and serving our neighbors.
Key Responsibilities:
Mission-Centered Leadership
Uphold and articulate the organization’s faith-based mission in all internal and external activities.
Lead with spiritual integrity and foster a culture rooted in prayer, service, and compassion.
Partner with approved churches and faith communities to mobilize resources and support.
Strategic & Organizational Oversight
Partner with the Board of Directors (BOD) to develop and implement a strategic plan aligned with both practical goals and spiritual values.
Oversee daily operations, including food acquisition, distribution, and logistics.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
Fundraising & Development
Cultivate a strong donor base from churches, individuals, businesses, and foundations.
Oversee grant writing, appeals, and fundraising events, integrating faith-forward messaging where appropriate with BOD approval.
Engage supporters through storytelling that reflects God’s work through the food bank.
Financial Stewardship
Manage the organization’s budget and ensure responsible, transparent use of resources.
Partner with the Treasurer to provide regular financial reports to the Board and ensure independent oversight is performed annually.
Prepare recommended annual budget with BOD Treasurer.
Staff & Volunteer Leadership
Lead and support a team of mission-aligned staff and volunteers.
Create a workplace culture that reflects Christ-centered values of humility, teamwork, and service.
Offer prayer, encouragement, and pastoral care as appropriate.
Community & Church Engagement
Serve as a spiritual and public ambassador of the food bank in the broader community.
Build and maintain relationships with local churches, ministries, nonprofits, and civic groups.
Qualifications:
A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to Christian values and the organization’s mission and principles.
Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or equivalent experience; studies in nonprofit management, theology, social work, or a related field are helpful.
Minimum five years of leadership experience in nonprofit, ministry, social work, community service roles, or similar organizational experience.
Proven experience in leading and managing teams, preferably in a nonprofit or religious setting.
Proven success in fundraising, team leadership, and strategic planning.
Strong understanding of financial management principles and fundraising strategies.
Ability to develop and implement strategic plans, and to adapt to changing circumstances.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization to diverse audiences.
Comfortable speaking to churches and representing the organization’s faith values.
Working Environment:
Hybrid mix of office, warehouse, church, and community settings.
Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities, including speaking at churches or events.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs and stand for periods during events or distributions.
Compensation:
Commensurate with experience.
