Job Description
This sponsored trainee position performs tasks and training as required by the Clear Creek County Sheriffs Office and attends a Level 1 Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Board Certification Academy. Upon successful completion of the Academy and obtaining a Level 1 P.O.S.T. Certification, this position transitions from Deputy Sheriff Trainee to a full-time sworn Deputy Sheriff in the Patrol Division of the Sheriffs Office.
* Pursuant to an agreement to be executed by the applicant following the successful completion of the background process and prior to hire, the Sheriffs Office shall advance the cost of the applicants Academy training and P.O.S.T. certification process, the balance of which shall be forgiven by the Sheriffs Office on a bi-weekly, pro rata basis over the course of two calendar years. The agreement shall require that should the applicant leave employment prior to the balance being fully forgiven, the pro rata remaining balance shall be deducted from the applicants final paycheck. A copy of the template agreement shall be provided upon request.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid drivers license, safe driving record, and a minimum of two (2) years of acceptable driving history
- At least 21 years of age by completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy
- U.S. Citizen or legal resident eligible for POST certification.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
- Must pass background check, drug screening, physical agility test and examination, and psychological evaluation.
- Formal education, often achieved through completion of a bachelors or associate degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or a related field, is advantageous.
- Prior experience in security, military, or law enforcement support roles.
- Completion of some criminal justice coursework or related training.
- This position is intended as a preparatory step for individuals seeking a full-time law enforcement career. Continued employment is contingent on obtaining P.O.S.T. certification within 12 months of the date of hire.

Tools & Equipment
- Requires the frequent use of general office equipment and general training/educational equipment as deemed necessary by P.O.S.T. Academy instructors.
- Recruits/Trainees shall not be authorized to carry a firearm or other weapon until they have completed the P.O.S.T. Academy, have completed any mandatory training designated by the Clear Creek County Sheriffs Office, and have been sworn in as a commissioned deputy for Clear Creek County.
Physical Demands
Requires varying degrees of physical demand, some sedentary, some requiring strenuous physical effort while wearing approximately fifteen to twenty pounds (15-20 lbs.) of duty equipment, including but not limited to a ballistic vest and equipment belt.
A member employed in this position may be required to:
- Lift and/or move objects weighing two hundred (200) pounds or more, including the limp body of a person.
- Physically defend his/herself from assault, wrestle, struggle, fight, restrain, or otherwise subdue uncooperative and resistant people of various abilities and strength.
- Quickly rescue endangered people, or physically separate individuals who are fighting, or preparing to fight.
- Jump over obstacles or negotiate passage through difficult terrain or areas.
- Function fully in darkness and daylight, possess acceptable close and distance vision acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of view.
- Perform First Aid/CPR to his or her level of training.
- Operate a law enforcement vehicle safely in non-emergency (routine) and emergency situations, including in various weather conditions and at various speeds.
- Effectively manipulate and operate a firearm as mandated within P.O.S.T. and Clear Creek County Sheriff training requirements.
- Effectively meet other physical demands as outlined in the course description of the P.O.S.T. Academy and as determined by the Clear Creek County Sheriffs Office.
- Work is performed in a variety of environments, including classroom, indoors, and outdoors, as established by the P.O.S.T. Academy. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, hot (may be extreme) and/or cold (may be extreme) conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne particles, and significant noise and vibrations. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high and/or precarious places or with explosives.
