Summary
The Deputy Committee on Publication is a member of the Manager's Office staff of the Committee on Publication. The work is motivated and animated by the Church Manual Article XXXIII: "...to correct in a Christian manner impositions on the public in regard to Christian Science, injustices done Mrs. Eddy and members of this church With a purpose to lift and heal public thought, and to give humanity the opportunity to see Christian Science in its true light, the Deputy reports to the Manager, Committees on Publication (who is also the Massachusetts Committee on Publication) and works closely with other members of the Manager's Office staff as needed. The work includes a daily commitment to the Christian Science healing practice that enables each need to be addressed effectively and "in a Christian manner." The practical work includes, but is not limited to, writing corrective responses for the media, clergy and academia; answering inquiries from students, the general public and church members; responding to requests for talks from public groups; working to correct misinformation that appears on websites and in social media; developing and supporting Assistant Committees on Publication; monitoring and engaging, as appropriate, with government and governmental agencies to share accurate information about Christian Science in relation to legislation or regulations; and researching topics related to the cases in our work. Work may also include assisting with various short- and long-term projects and communicating with the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Manager and with the guidance and/or help of the Manager's office staff, corrects impositions on the public in regard to Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, The Mother Church, and church members in the Massachusetts media and in any avenues of society (academic, medical, publishing, entertainment, governmental, religious, etc.) where they occur.
Responds to local journalists, editors, producers, etc. (print, broadcast, and Internet), authors, and others who are writing, posting, or broadcasting about Christian Science.
Responds to invitations and gives talks to local public groups, such as churches, schools, retirement communities, etc., that have requested a speaker on Christian Science.
Responds to students and other inquirers, providing interviews and/or written materials.
Partners with the Plaza Activities Group Tours & Visitor Engagement Coordinator to provide talks about Christian Science to interested tour groups of an academic or ecumenical nature.
Government Activities
Under the direction of the Manager and in close collaboration with Government Relations Counsel, works as needed to correct misconceptions regarding Christian Science and the healing practice of Christian Scientists. This includes expressing a Christian manner in all aspects of engagement and conversation with various private and public entities.
Remains alert to legislative issues in Massachusetts to support legislation regarding health, education, and other matters.
Monitors Massachusetts legislation, statutes, and regulations in collaboration with the Government Relations team.
Field Communications
Supports the identification and establishment of Assistant Committees on Publication in branch churches and societies throughout Massachusetts, and engages with them regarding prayerful and practical support of the work.
Communicates with branch churches and societies in Massachusetts generally through the Clerks and Assistant Committees.
Provides information and/or answers questions from individual Christian Scientists in Massachusetts regarding issues related to the Committee on Publication and its activities.
Assists the Committee for Massachusetts in preparing and giving church talks or workshops, and in preparing and distributing a newsletter three times a year.

Supervisor: Reports directly to the Manager of Committees on Publication

This position has regular contact with the Manager, Committees on Publication, and the Manager's office staff, other departments at The Mother Church, members, and the public.
Job Requirements
Education/Experience
This position requires a college education. At least five to seven years of work experience preferred. Experience or familiarity with the Manual -outlined purpose of the Committee on Publication work would be beneficial.
Knowledge/Skills
Strong writing skills, familiarity with current issues, spiritual discernment, willingness to learn, and readiness to approach the work with humble prayer and listening, and in close collaboration with the Manager and the Manager's office staff.
Work Place
This individual works in the Manager's Office in Boston.
Engagement with Christian Science
Mother Church membership and Primary class instruction are required.
