Job Summary This position is responsible for directing the operations of the Department of English in the School of Arts & Letters. Responsibilities Administration - Complete annual departmental assessment reports Assists in the development and maintenance of curriculum and courses representative of the discipline and supportive of the educational objectives of the university. Assists in evaluating, recruiting and recommending the appointment of English faculty. Monitors student success, including student retention and progression data. Develops semester course schedules. Produces a variety of reports. Ensures consist of pedagogy in subjects across all campuses. Ensure all relevant courses are in compliance with USG and SACSCOC policies. Completes graduation audits and course substitution petitions for majors. Manages advising, registration and course enrollment functions. Manages and documents student complaints and grade appeals. Assists the Dean's Office with recruitment and retention strategies
Personnel Management - Ensures all personnel decisions are in compliance USG and MGA faculty and staff policies. Reviews problems between faculty members or between faculty and students. Recommends faculty for tenure, promotion, or non-renewal contract status as appropriate. Assigns mentors to new hire faculty and staff members. Coordinates the work of adjunct faculty. Completes annual evaluation of faculty and staff performance. Approve faculty and staff work schedules and leave requests within a timely manner Performs related duties as assigned.
Budget Management - Assists in the development of the department budget recommendation; supplies data and statistics; administrators assigned budgets. Ensure proper equipment and supplies are ordered in a timely manner with the assistance of the Administrative Coordinator in accordance with budgetary guidelines and parameters
Other Duties - Attends meetings scheduled by the Dean, Provost, or other relevant administrators as a representative of the department. Participates in strategic planning development and initiatives as needed. Ensure departmental representatives are available during summer sessions and campus recruitment events The expectation that the Chair's teaching load is three courses over the academic year. Required Qualifications Educational Requirements An earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Required Experience Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand all objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience. Preferred Qualifications Preferred Experience Experience in curriculum development. Experience in successfully supporting program/enrollment growth. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of the field relevant to the assigned department. Knowledge of assessment and strategic planning strategies. Knowledge of budget development and management principles. Knowledge of classroom practices, teaching methodologies, assessment systems, and educational technology. Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority. Skill to make timely decisions. Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public. Skill in oral and written communication.
