Job Title
Responsible for financial, surgical information, scheduling, materials inventory control, and management systems for the Department of Surgical Services. Participates in projects related to acquisition, utilization, and distribution of equipment and supplies. Communicates with sales representatives and clinical staff regarding product and inventory contracts. Responsible for evaluation of new products and product conversion. Supervises scheduling and charging staff. Responsible for surgical information system. Analyzes financial and statistical data, identifies trends, and coordinates reporting. Understands all aspects of the business of surgical services. He/she will assist leadership with all reports and make recommendations as to how to improve the business. He/she will lead the capital budget process as well as control the operating budget. Responsible for all aspects of reporting, charging, and scheduling.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Financial analysis of surgical services: Provides financial training and support for the surgical services management staff. Reviews financial statements monthly to ensure accuracy and compliance with goals and expectations. Prepares variance analysis monthly, and more frequently as requested, to meet the needs of senior management for surgical services. Works with physicians as required for budgeting/financial purposes. Functions as a conduit for communications to finance (i.e., placing equipment in service, CON items, journal entries, statistics preparation, budget contact, charge master, proformas, cost accounting liaison, denials, surveys, etc) for surgical services. Provides financial analysis of any proposed contracts for surgical services. As directed, provides feedback to the Director or other management staff about surgical services contracts. Evaluates opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies for surgical services. Participates in Value Analysis Committee to ensure best pricing initiatives for the department. Validates accuracy of patient billing (inpatient vs. outpatient charges) and statistics reporting for surgical services. Reports room utilization and block utilization monthly and as requested. Prepares trending analysis as requested. Evaluates profitability for department, service line, and specialty. Coordinates the capital/operating budget process for surgical services. Works with Clinical Coordinators and surgeons to determine capital and operating needs. Assists in prioritization of capital needs. Updates the Director as requested on status of capital budget projects and availability of capital and operating budget funds. Assists in processing capital requisitions, ensuring that budgeted parameters are adhered to. Analyzes and interprets reports provided regarding cost and productivity. Reviews productivity data for accuracy and provides information to the Director for opportunities to enhance financial performance. Coordinates data with decision support department to validate accuracy for surgical services. Reviews and explains variances in the Action data. Makes recommendations to the Director as to how best to meet these goals. Serves as leader with the Director of Surgical Services in strategic planning for future needs of surgical services. Prepares proformas for Surgical Services as requested by any member of the Management or Administrative Team. Works to implement operational items related to proformas/new programs as directed. Communicates with surgeons and staff to identify trends that might affect the assigned facility in the future. Works with vendors to determine future potential trends that might meet the needs of the department. Responsible for all aspects of the surgical information system. Supervises charging and scheduling staff. Serves as system administrator for all information systems. Ensures the upgrading and maintenance of software and hardware. Project lead for all implementation systems. Assists Leadership Team to meet all goals. Actively participates in Leadership WellStar by completing Cascade Learning Modules. Utilizes scripting and rounding to improve customer service. Coordinates information from patient satisfaction scores for surgical services, and analyzes opportunities for improvement. Evaluates profitability of surgical services lines; provides feedback on opportunities such as coding enhancements, contracting opportunities, etc, which would help our margins. Assumes responsibilities for all other duties assigned. Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
Bachelors Information Technology or Bachelors Information Systems or Bachelors Business Administration/Management or Bachelors Finance or Bachelors Accounting
Masters Preferred
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience is required. Experience with budgeting, statistics, systems analysis, and/or project management in a healthcare setting is preferred.
Required Minimum Skills:
Excellent communication skills, written and oral. Must be able to establish excellent working relationships with physicians, staff, and other hospital departments. Financial analysis, presentation skills, knowledge of systems, knowledge of LEAN processes. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to lead a group through change.
