Description
The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Fire Chief. This position supports the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department, including the supervision and assignment of firefighting personnel, directing fire suppression, technical rescue and emergency medical activities. Additionally, performing necessary administrative functions and serving as a liaison with the general public to ensure the safe, effective and responsible operation of the Fire Department.
Examples of Duties
Manages, directs and supervises personnel during one of three suppression shifts. Reviews, monitors and inspects training, equipment and station maintenance daily. Conducts staff meetings and performance evaluations, implements and evaluates labor contracts with organized representatives.
Responds to structural and other major fires, vehicle accidents and Hazmat emergencies. Assumes command of emergency activities, secures the scene, and directs firefighting personnel at the scene. Assigns personnel and equipment, and coordinates activities with other emergency services during non-fire emergencies.
Plans, directs, and evaluates functional work objectives to accomplish missions and goals of assigned areas of responsibility. Special assignments may include, but are not limited to: Building and Grounds, Equipment and Apparatus, EMS, IST, Safety, and Infection Control.
Performs administrative functions, at the direction of theFire Chief, and in coordination with the Division Chief of Training , the Division of Prevention, and City Administrator; formulates fire-related policies, rules and regulations; maintains and reviews department records of all duty-shift operations; prepares daily and monthly work schedules; records sick leave, vacation and overtime; prepares and analyzes various records and reports; and assists with equipment purchases and budgeting for the Fire Department.
Works closely with other governmental agencies (local, regional, state and federal) community organizations and the general public.
Prepares and delivers media releases and assists the media with information on fire-related topics, prevention, and general inquiries.
Provides information and assistance to the media and private citizens; assists with the development of news releases, displays and exhibits, fire safety programs, and equipment demonstrations; promotes programs on EMS, firefighting activities, fire prevention, and rescue operations.
Serves as a uniformed member of the fire service.
May assume the role of the Fire Chief in his absence.
SUPERVISORY: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include supervising direct reports through coaching, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Typical Qualifications
Physical: Ability to pass rigorous periodic physical examinations; work in hazardous, superheated conditions in full gear; and lift and carry equipment and victims of various weights.
Mental: Ability to remain competent during stressful and emergency situations; assist in the extrication of dead, severely injured and/or maimed persons; mental ability to enter hazardous areas and perform dangerous tasks; and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by completion of college level course work in fire science, publicadministration, business administration or related field. At least six years' experience as a full-time professional fire fighter including five years' experience as a fire captain, or equivalent experience in the fire service.
Supplemental Information
Must have a valid Missouri drivers' license, Missouri certification as Fire Fighter I and II, Hazmat Ops and Missouri EMT-B or EMT-P or NREMT within 12 months of hire. Other preferred qualifications include certifications in Fire Investigator, Inspector, Instructor, Fire Officer, Hazardous Materials Technician, NFPA 1670 credentials and NIMS IS100-800.In addition to operational proficiencies, administrativeknowledge, skills, and abilities as are required.
This position typically works a 48-hour shift on a 48/96 rotation but may be reassigned to a traditional work week based on the needs of the Department
