Job Summary:
The School of the Humanities (part of the Maxwell Becton College of Liberal Arts and Education) at Fairleigh Dickinson University (https://www.fdu.edu/) is looking for part-time (adjunct) faculty to teach in-person sections of Ethics and other Philosophy courses starting in Fall 2025. Sections are all 3 credit hours (150 minutes of class per week) and meet Monday-Thursday, Tuesday-Friday, or as a double block on different days including Wednesday. You can teach one course or several. If you are successful in the position, teaching should be available every semester going forward.
Our immediate need for Fall 2025 (semester starting August 25, see https://www.fdu.edu/academics/academic-calendar/2025-2026/) is for sections of Ethics, Intro to Philosophy, and Ethical Issues in the Movies. Most of these are scheduled to meet in person on our Florham Campus at 285 Madison Avenue, Madison NJ, and on our Metro Campus at 1000 River Road, Teaneck NJ, but for an exceptional candidate we could explore moving them online (we already have offers to teach online and would much prefer in person). There may be a few opportunities to teach sections that are already designated synchronous online.
Ethics is a Gen Ed requirement at FDU: all our students have to take it. We are looking for someone who can teach the subject responsibly, from a philosophical standpoint, but in a way that is interactive, engaging, relevant to students' lives, and maybe even fun. Intro to Philosophy is for our Humanities majors as well as the Gen Ed requirement in Humanities. All sections are expected to have 10-30 students and to involve significant discussion, not just lecture.
The ideal candidate would have a PhD in Philosophy with specialization in ethics. We will be happy to consider you if you have any advanced degree in Philosophy or a related field, even if you are currently in graduate school, as long as you have experience with ethics or moral philosophy and can show some evidence of excellence in teaching. If you have a background in Theology or religious instruction, you are welcome to apply as long as you appreciate that FDU is not religiously affiliated and any teaching you do for us should not advance any particular religious viewpoint.
