Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry seeks applicants for a part-time instructor to teach one section of General Chemistry (CHM113). The successful candidate will teach a combined lecture and lab course as a member of a group of faculty that includes both the lecturers and lab personnel for the course. The Canvas learning management system (LMS) is used by all courses and may include the reading materials, online quizzes, and lecture slides.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach one (1) weekly section of General Chemistry (CHM 113), which includes: providing lectures that introduce the fundamentals of chemistry (as define by our learning objectives) and prepares students for organic chemistry; assisting students performing experiments; holding weekly office hours (3 hr/wk, can be online); being available by email; and providing timely grading of all written assignments in own section.
- Work cooperatively with Department Faculty.
- Supervise and mentor work-study lab assistants within own section.
- In-person lecture and lab (3 times weekly, 2 hrs per meeting).
- Grade assignments and exams.
- Encourage students to complete the course evaluations at the end of each semester.
Education and/or Experience
Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field, or M.S. in chemistry with experience working in chemistry. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with a learning management system (LMS, e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) preferred. Ability to use both Macintosh and Windows computers and to teach the use of Excel, Word, and ChemDraw. Strong working knowledge of NMR, IR, GCMS, GC-TCD, and polarimeters preferred. Ability to write clearly and informatively. Strong oral communication skills.
